Why Your Bed Deserves Some TLC

To be able to fully unwind at the end of a busy day, it is so important that your bedroom provides that place to rest and recover. Think of your bedroom as a cocoon, it's the place where you can shed away the stresses of the day. And, if you want your bed to offer a place to relax, you need to look after it!

Keeping your bed in tip top shape not only keeps it comfy and supportive, but it also looks better and is something you can rely on as well as being proud of.

Enough of the semantics! Let’s get right into how you can keep your bed looking brilliant.

How To Keep Your Bedding Fresh

There is nothing better than the feeling of fresh bed sheets. And, when you consider that the average person spends a third of their life asleep in bed this makes it even more important to keep your bedding clean. Without keeping your bedding clean, you are more exposed to allergies, illness and even bed bugs, which no one wants.

It is recommended to wash your bed sheets on a weekly basis, in order to avoid odour, dead skin and any other nasty bits.

The first step in how to wash duvets and pillows is to check the care label for specific instructions from the manufacturer. These may vary depending on whether they are filled with feather, down or synthetic fibres, and some may even require professional dry cleaning.

For machine washable duvets and pillows, we recommend that you opt for a gentle cycle and invest in mild, eco-friendly detergent to preserve the delicate fibres and minimise environmental impact. This way, you can avoid lumping, colour bleeding and snags to ensure your bedding stays fresh and clean.

Pay Attention To Your Duvets and Pillows

Duvets: To keep your duvet fresh and clean, we recommend cleaning it once a month to keep it fresh. This also depends on how much you sweat at night as if you find yourself sleeping hot the chances are you are releasing sweat into the duvet.

If you do not keep on top of washing your duvet, you might notice yellow stains appear on your duvet. Yellow stains on your duvet are often caused by sweat or skin oils, also known as sebum.

Pillows: Pillows should also be washed every two to three months to remove sweat, oils, and dust. For synthetic-filled pillows, a gentle cycle in the washing machine with a small amount of mild detergent will work fine. Feather-filled pillows may require a little more care, so always check the label, as they often benefit from professional cleaning to maintain their loft and comfort.

Rotate and Air Out Your Bedding

One of the best ways to air out your bedding is to simply give it a good shake in the air and allow it to breathe for 10-15 minutes. If you have the time, do this every morning for the best results as it can really prolong the lifespan of the bedding. Plus, it will help reduce moisture as well as keeping your bed fresher.

It is also important to have a few different sets of bedding so that you can rotate from one to the other, ensuring even wear and tear on each as well as making sure you always have a bedding set to put on when the other one is in the wash.

Use Mattress and Pillow Protectors

Using Mattress and Pillow protectors is important because they will act as a barrier between your body and your mattress protecting it from potential spills, stains and dirt. Instead of risking permanently staining your expensive mattress, you can use a protector which can be bought relatively inexpensively from a local bedding retailer or supermarket.

The same goes for pillow protectors. Pillow protectors can help act as the barrier between your head and the more expensive pillow stopping the risk of strings from hair oil, sweat and shedding hair. It is advisable to treat protectors like your sheets and wash them every couple of weeks or so for maximum freshness.

Handle Stains Quickly

Act fast:

If you spill something on your bedding, addressing it immediately can prevent the stain from setting. Blot the affected area with a clean cloth to soak up as much of the spill as possible. It is not a good idea to rub, as this can spread the stain further. We recommend using a stain remover that’s safe for the fabric type, and follow the instructions carefully.

For more stubborn stains:

When stains persist, a simple homemade solution can work wonders. Mix warm water, a mild detergent, and baking soda into a paste. Carefully dab it onto the stain and let it sit for 10–15 minutes to break down the mark. Gently rinse or wash the area afterward, and repeat if necessary. For more delicate fabrics, always test a small area first to avoid damage.

By incorporating these habits, you can keep your bedding in excellent condition and extend its lifespan.

Dry Bedding Thoroughly

It is super important to make sure when you have washed your bedding, that you dry it after thoroughly. This is because damp bedding can be a potential breeding ground for mold and mildew, which can leave an unpleasant smell on your bedding. And no one wants smelly bedding, especially after they have just washed it.

If you can, especially in the summer months make sure to dry your bedding outdoors or out of the window on a drying line. This way you can save money on electricity needed to power your dryer, as well as helping out the environment a little too. Think of it as you doing your little bit to help save the world!

In the winter months or if it is raining it is advisable to use a tumble dryer to dry out your bedding instead of leaving it damp. You only need to use a low heat setting to dry it out fully. It is also important to take them out swiftly after the cycle has finished to avoid any potential wrinkling.

Final Words

Your bed is more than just a place to sleep; it’s where you unwind, relax, and recharge after a long day. Taking care of it doesn’t have to be a chore. Simple habits like keeping your bedding fresh, cleaning up spills quickly, and using protectors can make a big difference in how comfortable and inviting your bed feels.

There’s nothing quite like getting into a clean, cosy bed at the end of the day. So, take a moment to care for your bed, and it will reward you with years of comfort and restful nights. Sweet dreams!
