When you’re looking to refresh the look and feel of your bedroom, one of the changes you could make that can have a big impact is a new headboard. Often seen as a statement piece within the bedroom, a new headboard can really help to transform your bedroom’s aesthetics.

However, it’s important to purchase the correct size for your bed to ensure it looks fantastic and prevent any annoying return processes. So we’ve put together a short guide that helps to ensure you measure all the correct places for your new headboard and also gives you a couple of things to consider when choosing your new headboard. So without further ado, grab your tape measure and let’s go.

Measuring Your Bed

The first steps to take before even looking for a new headboard is to note down the correct dimensions for your bed. By having this information to hand, you’ll know your options for each of the types of headboards on the market and will be able to see which size headboard matches your bed.

Measuring For Headboard Width

First of all, you want to ensure that the new headboard isn’t too wide or not wide enough for your bed. Use your tape measure to measure the width of your bed base. It’s important to measure your bed base and not the mattress, because this will give you the most accurate measurement and after all, it’s what your headboard is going to be attached to (unless you opt for a wall mounted headboard, more on that later).

Measuring For Headboard Height

Next up, you want to determine how high your new headboard should be. Remember to take into account your mattress on top of the bed too. Once you’ve visualised that, we recommend measuring from the floor up to that point on your wall and jotting it down just in case.

As a guide, the standard height of a headboard is around 67cm from the top of your mattress for a single bed and 75-100cm for double and king size headboards. But it’s important to remember that the size of the headboard as specified on a website will be the actual size of the headboard, so will be a higher value than the ‘visible’ area of your headboard once there’s a mattress on the bed. It’s usually around 10cm of the headboard that will be obscured by the mattress, but this depends on the thickness of your mattress.

Don’t Forget The Height Of Your Bed

It’s also important to measure the height of your bed too, from the floor to the underside of the bed. This is especially important to be able to consider floor standing headboards on your shopping journey.

Headboard Fixing Options

So now that you have the measurements of your bed, it’s time for the fun part, researching and choosing the perfect headboard for your bed. There’s plenty of types to choose from, so we’ve made that decision a little easier by simply explaining them below.

Strut Headboards

This is the most common headboard type on the market. Featuring two struts (aka legs) that come down from the headboard area you’ll see once it’s attached to your bed. These struts are attached to your bed base, often by inserting a bolt through the gap in each of the struts and into the fixing point in the base of your bed.

If there’s no fixing point, you may need to create one by using a drill, but this all depends on the type of bed base you have.

Wall Mounted Headboards

These headboards are attached to your bedroom wall instead of the bed itself. To be able to fix one of these you’ll need some additional tools such as a drill, a level spirit and basic DIY skills.

With a wall mounted headboard, you have the ability to place the headboard higher than you could with a strut headboard, so it’s important to consider that alongside the measurements you noted down in the first part of this guide.

By placing the headboard just above the mattress, you could actually save a little more space in your room too as it allows you to push the bed base all the way up to the wall underneath it. We know it wouldn’t create much space, but sometimes, every little helps.

Floor Standing Headboards

Floor standing headboards are exactly that, standing on the floor whilst still being attached to your bed base to ensure stability. These headboards can really feel like a statement piece in your bedroom and there’s so many beautiful designs to choose from.

It’s important to compare all the measurements you’ve taken, especially the one from the floor to the base of your bed to help you pick the right size floor standing headboard for your bed.

The last thing you want is to not be able to attach it to your bed correctly or end up with the height or width of the headboard not looking right for your bed.

Other Things To Consider

So you’ve got your measurements and you’ve decided on the type of headboard you desire, well you’re nearly ready to go shopping. Just make sure you consider the following too before buying your new headboard.

Mattress Thickness

We’ve mentioned a few times that it’s important to consider how much of the headboard you’ll actually see once it’s on your bed and there’s a mattress there too. It really is an important factor to consider and you need to ensure you’ve got all your measurements correct and think about the visible space when looking at the headboard size either on a  retailer’s website or in a physical store.

We recommend also measuring your mattress’ height to help you with this. Or if you’re on the lookout for a new mattress too, make sure to consider the height of the new mattress and any mattress toppers you may have on top too.

Consider The Surrounding Space

Last but not least, it’s important to consider the space surrounding your bed in your bedroom. The last thing you want is for everything to look too close together and cluttered in your bedroom.

So when you’re deciding on the ideal height and width of your headboard, please take any furniture or decorations on the wall that are close to the bed into consideration too.

Now To Choose Your Next Headboard

Now the fun really begins, you’ve got your measurements, the desired height and width of your new headboard and you’ve got the information you need when it comes to the different headboard types on the market. Now it’s time for you to do your research and shop around for a style and price that works for your budget.
